That could have been the headline based upon the KHOU/Stein poll for Harris County that was released last week if the subject was the Harris County Sheriff’s race. Instead, you get this blurb:
Republican crossover voters are helping push Democratic Sheriff Adrian Garcia to 51 percent in this survey, compared to Republican challenger Louis Guthrie’s 32 percent. Another 13 percent were undecided.
The difference? Guthrie led among those that had already cast their ballot, 47{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}-42{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}. Garcia’s numbers are for “likely voters”. Which is more valid?
That poll was also interesting because KHOU reported that in the race for Harris County District Attorney, Mike Anderson had a 41-35 advantage over Lloyd Oliver. But the detailed poll questions/responses that Stein gave to Charles Kuffner shows the actual numbers to be 39-38 for Anderson. Is the Jewish vote turning to Oliver because of Shami?
So goes the fun of polling and deciding whether or not to put your faith in a specific poll. I personally don’t give much credence to that particular poll – if anyone really thinks that Paul Sadler is going to beat Ted Cruz in Harris County in this election cycle, well, I just ain’t buying it. It surely brought tears of happiness to our local lefties though.
What is it about Louis Guthrie that scares latte-sipping columnists and country-club Republicans? After all, Patti Kilday Hart of the Houston Chronicle loves to rant about Guthrie having some fender benders and how Garcia had to fire him for using his badge wrong, whatever that means. What she doesn’t tell her readers is that Garcia CAUSED a near fatal accident when he made a u-turn in front of a METRO bus and totaled his car, leaving his partner severely injured and unable to work. She doesn’t mention that the good sheriff “forgot” about a bag of marijuana in his briefcase, pot that was supposed to be turned in for evidence. She tells her readers that Guthrie’s firing was sent back for review but fails to tell them why: the good sheriff did not show the civil service commission evidence that shows him doing nothing more than observing at the infamous car wash. She also fails to explain that the reason the good sheriff is appealing that ruling is so that Guthrie cannot be exonerated until after the election. Amazing, no?
Personally, I think that the latte sippers don’t understand a man like Louis Guthrie. Someone who isn’t afraid to get out of his patrol car at 2:30 am and enter a dark alley without knowing what is at the other end. It’s much, much easier for them to understand a man that trades deputies for communications staff and looks good in his uniform while wearing a turban or riding a horse:
Louis Guthrie worked his way up through the ranks, earning his degree along the way. When Adrian Garcia had an opportunity to rid himself of a potential political opponent, he took it. That injustice will be righted in the end.
But with your vote, you can send a message now. It is time for the Harris County Sheriff’s Department to get back to the business of crime prevention, apprehension, and incarceration and away from feel good photo ops and communications. Vote for a real lawman, Louis Guthrie.
