I have to admit that I have no idea who Jonathan Hansen is. He might be the right choice for Houston City Council At-Large Position 4 and he might not be the right choice.
But I get an awful lot of press releases from candidates and this is an example of how to write one if you want someone like me to read it. It certainly makes me aware of his campaign and gets me interested in finding out more about him. And that is what a press release is supposed to do.
Great job, Mr. Hansen and good luck in your campaign.

The problem that I have with keeping the current minimum wage level is perhaps my stingy side coming out. There was a time when only a few service employees, teenagers, and part time workers made the minimum wage. Eventually, most of these folks gravitated to higher paying jobs in the manufacturing sector….Well those manufacturing jobs moved overseas and we are left with the lower tech service sector and retail jobs.
My Darwin side has no problem with this state of affairs. It was the general cr@##y nature of those jobs that motivated me to finish college and become an engineer.
But another side of my brain tells me the following:
1. McDonalds and WalMart openly hold counseling sessions for their employees on how to apply for government benefits. Am I indirectly subsidizing these guys to improve their margins on a burger?
2. As I stated before, Minimum Wage Jobs used to be mostly a temporary thing for the young and some really unskilled workers at the low end of the scale. I don’t believe that is the case today and maybe we need to revisit the Minimum Wage..

It seems to me that there is a very simple remedy here. If you don’t like what your current job is paying, then find a different one, or convince your boss that you are worth more money. Why is it that we keep expecting the Government to fix all of our problems? We’re adults in a great nation with endless opportunities. If we don’t like the situation we’re in, then it’s up to us to change it – not sit around crying like an abandoned baby hoping for someone to offer a spare teat to suck.
Certainly there are individuals with specific issues that need assistance. But those situations need to be dealt with individually rather than yet another heavy-handed government edict that won’t actually fix the problem and will cause even more issues down the road. You’d think that after watching the Government founder around for more than half a century trying to “fight poverty”, with an amazing lack of success, we would be willing to try something different, but sadly, no, there are still those who think that a government edict will fix anything. Idiots.

Let’s make sure I understand. A person earning the minimum wage working 40 hours per week makes $15,000 per year. To get up to the poverty level, he has to apply for govenment benefits.
So, middle class taxpayers — and even people making less — are subsidizing Walmart and McDonalds by picking up the tab for things like health care and food stamps to get their employees up to the poverty level. Somehow that doesn’t seem right.

Uh, Tom, you need to check your math skills, buddy. $15.00 X 40 X 52 = $31,200 …

The current Texas minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, not $15..
