64 Million Vacant Homes, Mobile Execution Vans, State Controlled Companies = "Significant Progress"?
Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee made a joint appearance …err, no…..each sent “congratulatory” letters presented to attendees of a seminar at the Chinese General Consulate in Houston. The May 29th event marked the 100th anniversary of China’s 1911 Revolution. Too bad the Congresswoman overlooked some facts about the ghost cities, mobile execution vans, and the state controlled companies on the Shanghai Stock Exchange when she commended China’s “progress”.
From the People’s Daily Online:
“I recognized the significant progress in China over the past 100 years” Sheila Jackson Lee said in her congratulatory certificate to the seminar.
From the Business Insider article “18 Facts About China That Will Blow Your Mind”:
-
China has 64 million vacant homes, including entire cities that are empty (Source: Chinese Academy of Social Sciences)
-
China executes three times as many people as the rest of the world combined, and uses mobile execution vans for efficiency (Source: The Guardian, USA Today)
-
When you buy Chinese stocks, you are basically financing he Chinese government; Eight of Shanghai’s top ten stocks are government owned (Source: Wikipedia, etc)
Yep, that’s Sheila Jackson Lee’s idea of progress.
But then again, strong analytical skills & facts were never really important to her anyway.

Yvonne,
What percentage of SJL's likely voters actually read or post on this blog? I am pretty sure that most of the readers and posters at Big's blog are not fans of SJL and that includes me. I am also pretty sure that none of us can; therefore a posting here is kinda like shouting down a very deep well.
I'll bet the Houston Defender has a blog and a good percentage of their readers could vote for her or an opponent.
By the way…I own outright some Chinese stocks and I bet you do too, if you have any mutual fund that specializes in "International, Asian, or Emerging" markets. I am not ignorant of the excesses, but then again I have worked overseas in South America, Africa, and Asia. There are a lot of dirty fingernails in some of the poorer countries.

Do you ever shop at Walmart? Target? Academy? Next time you go there look on the back of the items and see where they were made. I'll bet 7 out of ten were made in China……Those galdarned communists are out capitalizing us. And we just can't get enough. What a world.
