With each New Year, comes a time of reflection and review. As we turn the page on 2015, we must also use this opportunity to look forward and refocus our efforts on advancing and rebuilding the economic and national security of the United States of America.
Through the course of the past year, it’s been an honor and privilege to serve the great folks of the 36th District of Texas. In our first year, we’ve accomplished some important things, such as passing conservative legislation and providing quality constituent services.
In the House, we passed more than 500 pieces of legislation, including bills to strengthen America’s national security, defend our Constitutional liberties, protect unborn children, expand American energy, and improve the care of our nation’s veterans. Importantly, we’ve also been able to successfully block many of President Obama’s ill-advised initiatives, such as his plans to raise taxes, grow government and restrict Second Amendment rights.
I’m also proud to have emerged as a leading voice in opposition of the President’s plans to bring tens of thousands of un-screened Syrian refugees into the United States. Having introduced the Resettlement Accountability National Security Act (H.R. 3314) back in July, I’ve been sounding the alarm and working tirelessly to suspend this reckless U.N.-led refugee resettlement program for quite some time.
While we did not secure enough support to stop the President in the latest budget battle, I will not relent in my efforts to suspend the refugee program and protect American citizens. Having already secured the support of 80 of my colleagues, it’s my goal to build a strong enough coalition to put an end to these reckless policies that endanger the safety and security of the American people.
Locally, our dedicated staff has also successfully helped hundreds of constituents address issues with federal agencies; including assisting local veterans secure the benefits they were promised and bringing long-overdue acknowledgment to several area veterans by tracking down the medals they had earned in battle, but had never received.
Lastly, in an effort to ensure that I’m hearing directly from those I’m so proud to represent, we held seven townhall meetings, nearly a dozen telephone townhall meetings and hundreds of constituent meetings.
While I share the frustrations of many about not being able to do more to defeat President Obama’s liberal policies, I am more committed than ever to advancing the common sense conservative values that are inherent in Texans.
I remain focused on stopping the growing threat to our national security posed by Islamic terrorism, an out-of-control border and massive illegal immigration. Securing our economic freedom by balancing our budget and paying down our $19 trillion national debt is one of the reasons I voted against the recent budget busting, go-along-to-get-along spending deal.
The American public deserves better than the failed leadership they are getting from President Obama. Congress must use 2016 as an opportunity to show the American people that there is a better path – one that is rooted in a less and intrusive government and a stronger and more robust national defense and foreign policy.
As we transition into the New Year, I promise to remain focused on serving the needs of our local communities and providing the people of the 36th Congressional District of Texas with the representation they deserve.
Gotta love Jared Woodfill. When it comes to a fight, he simply refuses to back down or be bullied. From the department of “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander” comes this:
Well, maybe in this case, I need to say it differently so that the HERO proponents can grasp it. Let’s try this: “What’s good for the gander that thinks he’s a goose is good for the goose that thinks she’s a gander”. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
In case you’ve forgotten, Houston voters destroyed Mayor Annise Parker’s attempt to redefine gender (among other things) in a 61-39 thrashing. The supporters of the measure filed multiple Public Information Act requests, similar to Parker’s own attempts to subpoena emails and sermon notes from Houston pastors. Yvonne wrote about it here.
It’s about time Republicans fought back against these bullies. I wish the Republican Party of Texas understood how critical it is that we do that, now, while the issue is hot, and every single time these people try to bully us. Being passive doesn’t work with these folks, you have to fight on their turf.

Conservative candidate Mitch Bosworth inspects more than 600 of signatures gathered from voters in Texas HD-127 in northeast Harris County to place Bosworth on the Republican primary ballot.

Collecting more than 600 signatures in only two weeks, grassroots conservative candidate Mitch Bosworth of Kingwood has officially filed for the Republican primary in Texas House District 127 in northeast Houston.
“The fact we were able to collect so many signatures in such a short amount of time to get on the ballot is proof there’s a groundswell for true conservatism in our district,” Bosworth said to a group of volunteers on December 12. “Three-term incumbent Dan Huberty has proven he’s soft on immigration, misguided on education, and happy to serve as a Joe Straus sock puppet. Huberty cares more about representing the interests of Speaker Straus than the people of HD-127.”
Calling himself a “Ted Cruz Conservative,” this is the first time Bosworth has run for public office. A member of the NRA and the Kingwood Tea Party, he attends a local men’s Bible study group and works as an associate design engineer. He’s been a part of the “liberty movement” since 2009.
Saying he refuses to be a sellout to big money donors, his campaign is run strictly on small donations from friends, family, supporters and self-funding. And instead of paying the $750 filing fee to be placed on the March Primary ballot, Bosworth has opted instead to collect signatures from HD-127 voters as allowed by Texas election law. He feels it’s the best way to get to know voters and for them to get to know him.
Key points of Bosworth’s platform include: enforcement of the southern border to stop the flow of terrorists and illegal aliens, ending Sanctuary Cities in Texas, providing School Choice for all Texas families, decreasing the maximum annual property appraisal rate increase to 5{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}, increasing 1st Amendment Religious Protection, and passing true Ethics reform for Texas lawmakers. He’s a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment protections for all Texans. Furthermore, he believes in strong 10th Amendment rights, so Texas is not under burdensome federal government regulations.
“Our voters are represented by firebrand conservatives like Ted Cruz, Ted Poe and Brandon Creighton,” Bosworth said. “Our state representative however seems to have great disdain for the conservative movement, once chiding ‘we should not to be beholden to a conservative group’ on the floor of the Texas House. He’s controlled by outside interests, not the will of the people. It’s time to retire Dan Huberty to private life.”
I happened to be at the Harris County Republican Party headquarters today when Mr. Bosworth was officially filing his candidacy.

He has an uphill battle running against an entrenched incumbent. Huberty is well liked in the Kingwood area and has focused on education during his three terms. The attacks on Straus will not be productive for Bosworth, it is an issue that only the very far right cares about or even knows about. Just ask Mary Huls about her efforts in my district, HD129. Bosworth will have to come up with some type of specific agenda for the district – note that everything in the press release is generic and focuses on state/national issues. That said, maybe he can make inroads if enough people bother to learn about Huberty.
I haven’t been able to find a website or Facebook page for Bosworth’s campaign. I did find his personal Facebook page. It’ll be interesting to see if the Kingwood Tea Party supports him or if they stay neutral and keep in good standing with Huberty.
It is expected that confusion reigns during election cycles, but really, how does a candidate for the Texas State House claim to advocate for Pro-Life while donating money to an organization that is intent on protecting abortion? In a recent announcement Texas Right to Life and Empower Texans endorsed Dr. Tom Oliverson in the race for Texas House District 130. Indeed, under the heading “Protecting the Unborn” on his webpage, Oliverson does claim the following:
“An unapologetic defender of life, Dr. Oliverson is staunchly opposed to abortion.”
Kebodeaux goes on to explain why the two organizations differ on issues of abortion, life sustaining fluids and DNR. Here is another excerpt from the article:
“TMA and Texas Right to Life differ on the definition of “anti-medicine.” Texas Right to Life’s definition includes feeding and treating patients, respecting advance directives, ensuring pregnant women are sufficiently informed before undergoing a life-changing and life-ending decision, and taking all measures allowable by law to protect the preborn….”
Having understood all this, in addition to the fact that, as an Alternate Delegate, he represented the TMA/TXPAC at the TMA Convention in support of the TMA values, could Dr. Tom Oliverson’s $6,000 donation to TMA/TexPAC have influenced the endorsement? Has he also donated money to the Texas Right to Life as a measure of counteracting his actions in support of an organization advocating abortions, while he espouses being a Pro-Life candidate? What is Dr. Oliverson’s real position on the key issues?
I guess the primary season is getting into high gear.

I would have thought that his recent rise to number 2 in Iowa would have sent money his way. I guess the national polls showing him in fourth place, lagging behind Marco Rubio, are affecting his donations.
Regardless of whether the issue is social, fiscal, criminal justice, property rights, or any other expansion of government pursued by liberals, it isn’t easy to defeat them. It takes hard work and commitment. Total commitment in the face of obnoxious, evil, nasty personal attacks. After leading the fight to repeal Houston’s odorous equal rights ordinance (HERO), Jared Woodfill should know.
Standing on Principle is Not Always Easy:
It is Time for the Republican Party of Texas to Take a Stand!

The Dallas City Council recently voted to allow men in women’s bathrooms as a direct rebuke to the vote on the Houston Bathroom Ordinance that was rejected (61{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} to 39{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}) overwhelmingly by the citizens of Houston. The Dallas City Council’s message is compounded by the fact that Dallas made the decision to embrace men in women’s bathrooms only a week after the Houston vote. The message they sent could not be clearer. I believe it is time to take a principled stand and send a message to the Dallas City Council that they should not profit economically from Texas Republicans with their outrageous contempt for our traditional values and spurning the voice of Texans who fought against and won their cause in a fair and free election. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Senator Don Huffines and numerous others are taking a stand against the Dallas “Bathroom Ordinance.”
Dallas officials have made it clear that they believe the Dallas Bathroom Ordinance will take convention business from Houston because Houstonians recently rejected the Houston Bathroom Ordinance. Phillip Jones, CEO of the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, recently indicated that he feared the repeal of HERO in Houston could hurt the entire state when it comes to booking national conventions. Mr. Jones further stated, HERO’s defeat could allow Dallas – which recently launched an LGBT tourism campaign called “All Love is Big Love” – to lure conventions away from Houston. Jones stated that that the city’s new slogan was, “Dallas: Aren’t You Glad We’re Not Houston.”
By keeping our RPT Convention in Dallas, we are supporting the mentality embraced by Phillip Jones and the LGBT political movements attempt to take convention business from cities like Houston who believe men should not be allowed to enter women’s restrooms. Why would we as a Republican Party embrace this agenda? Shouldn’t we be taking a principled stand against it and moving our Republican dollars to a venue that respects our values and beliefs?
The current leadership of the Republican Party of Texas believes it is too hard to change the convention location. Without even trying to relocate the convention, they have given all the reasons they believe the convention cannot be relocated. I understand that moving a convention is not easy. However, it was not easy to collect approximately 55,000 signatures in thirty days to defeat the Houston Bathroom Ordinance. It was not easy to spend almost a year in litigation, going to the Texas Supreme Court twice, to earn the right to vote on the Houston Bathroom Ordinance. It was not easy to take on President Obama, Vice President Biden, Apple, GE, BASF, Sally Field, every major newspaper’s editorial board and the numerous others who opposed us in Houston. It was not easy to fight the $5 million dollars poured into Houston from out of state LGBT interests. But I ask you, my friend, at what price do we hold our convictions dear? What cost would we bear to uphold our values and principles? Sometimes doing the right thing is hard.
Keeping the RPT Convention in Dallas would simply play into the radical left’s argument that Bathroom Ordinances are good for business. Why would we reward Dallas City Council for its actions? In fact, there is a compelling case to be made that taking this stand would help us take back Dallas County-a county that has Democrats in every countywide office but one.
While not every battle is won, there are certainly those that must be fought. Please contact the RPT andyour SREC member regarding this important issue. Let’s make our voices heard in Dallas and across the country by voting to move the convention!
At Monday’s quarterly meeting of the Harris County Republican Party’s Executive Committee, the party choose not to approve a resolution asking the state party to relocate the 2016 state party convention. Not enough time. Too much money. Not our business, let Dallas voters handle it.
Excuses abound but commitment to principle is in very short supply.
State Rep. Molly White penned the following letter to the state party.
As many of you know, I disagree with the plank in the party platform that Rep. White references. I have publicly supported gay marriage for some time. I have publicly supported ENDA, a federal version of HERO, because I think that is the proper place for this type of law. And yes, many Republicans use those two positions to call me a “librul”. Whatever.
But Rep. White is correct in her assessment that fighting this fight will increase trust in the party and ultimately help in the battle against government expansion. If we are truly the party of smaller, more effective government, we need to act on that when we can.
Will moving the convention be “hard”? Surely. Will it inconvenience some people? Likely. Will it cost the party money? Short term, perhaps, but I think that a campaign to raise money to replace the contractual fee losses will be successful.
Most important, will it show that Texas Republicans put principle ahead of money? Certainly.
