I first told you about former Pearland City Council member Felicia Harris back in October. Since that time, I’ve been able to sit down and talk to her and she continues to impress with her knowledge of the issues and direction that she wants to move the country and the district.
She isn’t your typical politician and lord knows I’ve met a lot of typical politicians. When you are talking to her there aren’t a lot of platitudes or political slogans, just the facts. When I met with her back in November, I asked her what three issues were most important to the district: Obamacare, EPA rules on the refineries, and the Keystone pipeline. That was prescient. Fast forward four months and businesses are still not growing because of fears about Obamacare, the EPA continues to thwart growth, and the Keystone pipeline – well, at this point in time, there is no Keystone pipeline because President Obama decided we didn’t need it.
Her campaign has produced a new television ad which features President Obama and the Keystone pipeline:
I like every part of that ad. Every candidate or consultant should watch that video and learn how to produce an effective ad. It focuses on specific things that President Obama has done that directly affect the district she is running in. And it presents her as I’ve come to know her – an outsider, not the usual politician, working to get things done.
In fact, during our first meeting, she talked about the “American Dream” and narrowed it down to “just let the people work”. And if you live or work (as I do) in CD-14, you know full well the impact the Federal government has on “letting the people work” with regulation after regulation. As an attorney in the energy sector, she knows the problems that “unintended consequences” that well-intentioned regulations have on the petro-chemical industry, be it an offshore rig, a refinery, or a sea port. Or, for that matter, Obamacare, with all of the unknowns and known costs coming our way in 2014.
There are a lot of candidates on the ballot in CD-14, some good, some not so good, some well known, some not so well known, and it would be a fool’s game to make a prediction at this point as to who will win or be in a run-off. What I can tell you is that now is the time for new voices, new ideas, politicians that are willing to work together to understand the issues and to solve the very real problems of the country and of CD-14. And in that light, Felicia Harris remains a candidate to watch.
