Continuing in the series on 2014 Primary candidates, I had an opportunity to sit and chat with John Amdur. John is one of the dozen candidates running in CD-36 to replace Rep. Steve Stockman, who decided at the last minute to run for U.S. Senate.
Amdur is a native Texan and has lived in the district since moving home in 2006 to work in and eventually take over his father’s law practice. He prefers to say that he runs a small business versus being a practicing attorney, although he supervises the attorneys on staff. The business focuses on immigration law and helping multi-national organizations move employees throughout the world. He also spent 2 1/2 years as a prosecutor in Dallas County. He and his wife Stacey married in 2002 and the couple has two daughters.
As for his political experience, he is currently on the city council of Nassau Bay. He has also worked in many campaigns for Republican candidates, voted in Republican primaries, and represents Nassau Bay on several area boards such as the Galveston Area Council. Not related to politics but certainly to public service, he is also a volunteer firefighter for Nassau Bay.
Although he is relatively young, don’t mistake his youth for having a lack of policy positions. He is well versed in Biggert-Waters and serves as the Nassau Bay Biggert-Waters task force. He told me that the act itself can’t be scrapped because it reauthorized the National Flood Insurance Proposal (NFIP) but that it must be delayed and then gutted and fixed. The economic impact of this bill on small cities on the coast in CD-36 is devastating. He also pledges to fight for the Port of Houston and getting the tax money that the port gives to the federal government returned to the Port Authority – he told me that the port currently sends $125 million to the federal government and gets back $20 million to maintain it.
Beyond those local issues, he talks about stopping the continued raising of the debt ceiling, the disastrous effects of Obamacare on the health care of the country, state, and district, and is also very socially conservative. He wants to take an aggressive approach towards the Johnson Space Center and work with the entire Texas delegation and explain the benefits of the space program to all Americans.
Regarding representing the district, he thinks that current Rep. Steve Stockman has the right formula with three district offices. He also wants to form a “kitchen cabinet” of advisors from each district. He pledges to serve only three terms, six years total because he thinks there is a psychological change in people that serve longer than that – they move from representing the people to representing themselves and staying in power.
Amdur is one of the young candidates that gives us old guys hope for the future of the Republican Party in Texas. His core values of faith, family, and community will resonate well with most of the voters in the district. He was the first person to file against Rep. Stockman, not knowing that Stockman would leave the post and he did that because he thought that the district could be represented better. He is the only person to sign the Grover Norquist Taxpayer Protection Pledge, which binds candidates and incumbents to oppose any and all tax increases. All of which bode well for the future of the district.
