If you were at the Downtown Houston Pachyderm Club’s weekly meeting yesterday, you heard a couple of remarkable claims. I’ve already written about one, so let’s talk about the other one.
During the question and answer session for Houston City Council At-Large 3 candidates, the issue of supporters of Michael Kubosh was brought up. Unfortunately, I didn’t record the meeting and can’t remember if it was a question from the audience or if Roy Morales brought it up. What I do know is that Michael’s answer was very misleading, at least without the context I describe below.
What I do recall of his answer is that Mike said that Quanell X wasn’t a supporter. I was stunned when I heard him say that because the plain fact of the matter is that Quanell X IS a supporter of Mike’s and Mike and I have discussed it many times. In a positive way. I think it is awesome that Michael Kubosh is able to reach out to all communities in Houston.
So I called Mike this morning and told him that I was going to smack him upside the head for his answer and did he have a reason for saying that? Perhaps he misspoke, ya know?
Mike told me that Roy has been out on the campaign trail saying that Quanell X was a financial supporter and that is what he was responding to. Mike told me that Quanell X hasn’t given him any financial support but that yes, Quanell X likes him. Upon recollection, Mike did mention that Quanell X had not given him any money later in his answer. But honestly, I didn’t interpret his answer that way.
Interestingly, Mike’s brother Paul left a comment on my friend Karen Townsend’s Pondering Penguin blog about this:
Think about it Mike Kubosh’s biggest supporter Quanell X? Please.
Well, that muddies the water a little bit more, doesn’t it?
Here’s the deal, I guess. The DHPC is not only my favorite club, it is Mike’s. And I’d bet that 90{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} of the attendees on Thursday had the same reaction I did because we all know that Mike reached out to Quanell X and had him at his campaign announcement:
That is a picture I took at Mike’s announcement. It isn’t a secret.
Look, I’m positive that Quanell X isn’t a financial supporter of Mike’s. Very few people are because Mike refuses to solicit campaign funds – he is for the most part self-funded because, as he told me earlier this year, how can he ask hard working people for money when he has enough to fund his own campaign?
As to his brother Paul’s comment that Quanell X isn’t Mike’s “biggest supporter”, I have no doubt about that because the line of supporters for Mike is pretty long and includes me. That said, Quannell X is a supporter of Mike’s.
Here’s the deal. Either you believe Mike’s answer that he thought the question was about Roy’s claims of financial support or you don’t.
I believe him because I’m a supporter and he would be foolish to try and get away with telling the DHPC that Quanell X didn’t support him in any other context. I mean, I was sitting 10 feet away – is it realistic to think that I wouldn’t notice this? On the other hand, I can understand anyone that supports Roy being perplexed by Mike’s statement that day because without the context of Roy’s alleged other statements, it doesn’t ring true.
The decision, as they say, is yours.
On another topic, mark your calendar to be sure you attend the DHPC’s December 5th meeting. They will be having their annual Christmas party and collecting donations for Toys for Tots. You will not want to miss this one because the featured speaker is none other than our next governor, Greg Abbott! Don’t forget to bring a toy – they will have a representative from Toys for Tots there to accept your gift. And be early – I don’t think that you will be able to get in if you arrive at noon. Club President Sophia Mafrige worked hard to make this happen, so be there, and bring a toy or three! Or, I suppose you could pay a hundred bucks to go hear Jared Woodfill’s Chairman’s Analysis on the 2014 Issues Facing Local Republicans. Heh, I know where I’ll be!

I found it quite odd that Mr Randy Kubosh commented on my blog post last night and included the rote crack about Mr. X. I never mentioned this part of the ongoing Morales/Kubosh saga. You have an interesting take on it, my friend. I heard from several Republican Women last night on the topic, as they have clearly heard Mr Kubosh boast of his support from Mr. X at their meetings. As I continue to state, for the record, I have no dog in this hunt but find this whole campaign back and forth very interesting. When I have my consultant’s hat on, the first thing I advise a client to do is be consistent. When I have my blogger’s hat on, I continue in my quest for transparency and fairness on the campaign trail.

CORRECTION; My mistake – it was Paul, not Randy who commented on my blog post. My apologies for the confusion.

Karen, you never mentioned it but you quoted snippets from Roy’s material. The danger in quoting snippets is that you may accidently mislead and I may be guilty of that also. I wasn’t at the DHPC so I don’t know what Mike said but I think it is very obvious to everyone that Quanell is not Mike’s biggest supporter. Secondly I don’t know why you would consider it odd? It is a blog, right? You did post looking for comments, right? Also did you figure out that back taxes thing?

I understand completely what Mike meant, if he knew what everyone else does, that Quanell was at the beginning and their is proof. He is dealing with a lie about campaign finance, his mind would naturally go to that. Why would anyone be asking him if he’s supported by Quannell? It’s proven. I guess he needs to make another statement to clear things up. It’s tough when your opponent is in the room, and he’s spreading lies.

I didn’t use any quotes from Mr Morales “material”, Mr. Kubosh. I clearly wrote that he responded to the drama and then copied his email response in the body of the post. Quotes include quotation marks, if I remember English class correctly. Except for the email, all of the rest of the blog post were my own words. You can say I’m “misleading” all you want. It doesn’t make it true. Again, I didn’t even broach this topic in my original post – I wasn’t there and the record is clear on Mr X being on campaign literature and at the announcement publicity. You brought in Mr. X’s name into your response – that was the part I thought was odd. It was off topic. As far as I know, no one claimed Mr X was Mr Kubosh’s “biggest” supporter. SInce I was included in the blog post above here on this blog, I responded. I’m sure in the pursuit of fairness, you understand that.
I note the tone of your response and acknowledge that you are the candidate’s brother and the other response I’ve received on my blog was from a paid staffer. So be it.

Well, there goes a relaxing Friday night at home. Karen since you acknowledge my comment on your blog here on Big Jolly ,I will respond here.( and I did the same on your blog) The one point of clarification that I made was that you repeated the false charge of back taxes as if it were fact
“He took action after obtaining evidence and let it move through the legal system. Kubosh paid the back taxes. I have to ask – if everything was ok, why did he do that?”
There were NO BACK TAXES, can you not acknowledge that ? It was a false claim by Mr. Morales and you repeat it by claiming Mr. Kubosh paid “back taxes” that is your quote.
You seem to be suggesting because only Paul Kubosh and myself have replied that somehow our posts are less than relevant because our motivation might be tainted. Your entire blog post was based upon a press release from a campaign but you don’t seem to call Mr. Morales’ motivation into question. And for the record I’m posting this on my time and will not charge Mr. Kubosh for this post.
Last time I checked just because I was paid for my opinion did not mean I did not maintain a Constitutional right to it.

There are many people in the Democrat communities and some of its civil rights leaders do support and even come over and vote on our Republican Candidates. If Quannel X wants to be a supporter of Michael then he is a Citizens of the United States and a Resident of Texas has all rights given to him to support whomever he chooses. We have Republicans that do the same…vote for Democrats too so why all the fuss on Mr. X.
Bernadette (me) knows Mr. X very well. We have done some projects together for families with children in the HISD on their rights too. I find Mr. X to be a person that cares deeply on what happens in his nexk of the woods and especially to children of color.
Please, I wish that Mr. Morales would abstain from political descredited moves because it does not become and “officer” that style at all. It bothers me deeply. Under handed politics and being a retired Officer does not mix well. You are always an Officer first.
I would not go out and condemn Mr. X at all. He is a very likeable person and in his company I have always been very well received and respected as a Republican lady. Do I agree with him all the time on his positions he takes … nope…not all of it but he is a voter with choices of what he wants to vote on and where and with whom he choses to show support.
David took a picture too of me hand shaking Mr. X and I am standing next to Mr. X in the pink pants.
When you are like Michael and I and his family lending a hand and working for the betterment of families and seniors and children you will cross path with all types of personalities and different voters, Libertarium, Democrats, Green Machine,, Blue and Red voters and all the crasies…but in the end the winner has to meet the needs of all and he can’t segregate himself at all and Michael will ot do that, but Roy would…and that is why I support Michael and its based on facts.
So, please stop your “wich hunt” and get back to reality…If you need to address something…then look at the example we got when President Bush, Sr. sign the Marriage certificate for two gays to get married. Isn’t he a Republican President and what does our (R) Platform says??? so you see it takes all persons to vote whichever ways and we want as many to cross over and vote for the good Republicans Candidates.
Thanks for understanding my points of view too. I help all people out and I don’t stand and ask “for me to help you out Lady, I need to know if you vote (R) or not?? that is ludicress
Paul Kubosh says
Karen, Roy has claimed that Quanell was Mike’s biggest supporter. He sent it out in an email blast. You asked why he did Mike pay back taxes? If you are a Roy supporter thats O.K. you can vote for whoever you would like to vote for. As to Quannel I assumed since you had been watching this race you would have been up to date on all of Roy’s attacks and his supporters attacks on Mike because of the Quannel connection. I don’t mean to offend you and I appreciate your interest in my brothers race.
