I received an E-blast from Harris County Republican Party Chair Jared Woodfill advising me that he and Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson had appeared on the TV discussing marijuana. So naturally I clicked over because I wanted to see how these two culture warriors (yeah, I know that Devon isn’t exactly one given the abortion issue and all but hey, who am I to argue?) would handle the subject.

Heh, I’m guessing that Jared sent that out before he realized he and Devon got their collective arses handed to them.
We need to have a real, substantive discussion about legalizing marijuana. Speaking strictly from this conservative Republican’s point of view, these two are not representative of my views. If this is the best we got……
The marijuana and marriage equality issues are the two big issues that are keeping the GOP from reaching the 40 and under crowd and are a barrier to outreach to the hispanic community. Both demographics support marijuana and same-sex marriage legalization at higher rates than the rest of the country.
Obamacare is taking its financial toll on our nation, and we should be decimating the Democrats in the polls but we are not. When we have party leaders who push a hard social agenda we wind up fighting Democrats on their terms, where they ultimately win.
I don’t see how anyone can claim to be “fiscally conservative while supporting continued canabis prohibition. It presents a logical fallacy.
I think you could make the same argument for social conservatism. True conservatives don’t want a nanny state telling them what they can’t do in the privacy of their own homes. If it is possible to enjoy alcohol responsibly, then the same is true for cannabis.
Kids will have access to weed and alcohol whether it’s legal or not, but it can be controlled to a greater extent if it’s no longer available on the street. Put weed vendors behind the counter, and not in the school parking lot.
where exactly did they get their “arses” handed to them??? Pretty civil discussion, if you ask me.
holly,
One person had facts and was able to discuss the issue factually. The other three were left to discuss the issue emotionally. I don’t even know why Jared was there.
I’m with David on this one – they sounded more like emotionally driven liberals than GOPers
That’s the cool thing about a good debater. They can cut you to ribbons and you don’t even realize it happened until your body parts start hitting the floor.
