I told you that one of the bright spots in last Tuesday’s elections was Dave Wilson winning his race for the Houston Community College’s District II Trustee position. It’s even brighter now that local and national LibDem (term stolen from Kevin Whited at blogHOUSTON.com) heads are exploding because a white man shouldn’t win in a district designed for blacks. Just in case you haven’t seen Doug Miller’s interview with Mr. Wilson, here it is:
I’m having fun watching local LibDem blogger Charles Kuffner’s complete meltdown over Mr. Wilson’s win. He’s back to cursing online, always a classy move. A Google site search shows just how obsessed Kuffner is with the man: searching for “Dave Wilson” results in 5,660 hits. Amazing. That’s a lot of blockquoting, Kuff!
Houston Chronicle columnist Lisa Falkenberg copies the LibDem terms for Mr. Wilson in her own column. Bizarrely, the Houston Chronicle Editorial board quotes “The Onion” in their hit piece. Good grief, that’s pretty low even for the Chron ed board. And he’s been on CNN, MSNBC, and in Politico.
All because a white guy won in a black district.
None of these publications bother to mention the fact that the community was not happy with the ousted incumbent. You know, the guy that voted to spend $45 million of “community college” money overseas in Qatar? Yeah, that guy. Yvonne Larsen wrote about it here. Mr. Wilson submitted a Letter to the Editor here about payoffs. And he wrote another Letter to the Editor about the Houston Chronicle being duped by HCC. And Judson Bryant wrote a comprehensive analysis of the money spent by HCC to subsidize foreign students. And last year Mr. Wilson presented his own comprehensive analysis on the declining student enrollment and burgeoning debt at HCC.
And yet each and every one of these attacks on Mr. Wilson fails to mention any of the problems at HCC that contributed to the defeat of the 24 year incumbent.
No, instead, they focus on the fact that Mr. Wilson is white, implying that black voters are so dumb that they didn’t have any knowledge about the poor financial condition of the district and the poor decision making of the incumbent.
Shame on them for their racist behavior.
N.M. Horwitz says
I think the comment is not that African-American voters are dumb as much as it is that voters, irrespective of their race, are dumb in general.
Also, don’t use “LibDem” to mean people you (wrongly) believe are socialists. It is the name of a centrist political party in the UK.
John Osenbaugh says
Mr. Horwitz,
You may have missed the massive coverage from numerous sources; but the bottom line is the (primarily minority) constituency was misjudged by the incumbent & his campaign managers who actually filed an election complaint that Wilson inferred he was black in ads to sway votes. Their words not Big Jolly’s
Regardless of UK politics, “lib-dem” is “right on” for our home turf. Texan conservative dems of 50’s-’70’s are today’s mainstream Republicans & dare I say, many are now becoming local T.E.A. party. The democratic party has lost its legitimacy- thus 38 d house members spilt ranks in yesterday’s vote to distance themselves, albeit to late.
