Some days you want to crawl back in bed and pretend that the news you heard upon wakening was just part of a nightmare. Today is one of those days for me when I woke up to the news that my friend Daniel McCool, Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy and Republican political activist, died last night of a heart attack.
I’d only known Daniel for a few years, I think probably 2009, but he had an impact on my life, as he did on many, many others. He was one of the most selfless persons I’ve ever known, either in politics or in life, always putting others first, working mostly in the background, long hours supporting other candidates and causes. When he ran for the Texas Senate in 2012, he self-funded the bulk of his campaign because he wanted to be truly independent and refused to take money from the insurance lobby or the trial lawyers. He was so proud of his election last week to be the SREC committeeman for SD11 because the party activists that elected him recognized his years of volunteer work for the cause of conservative Republicans.
Rest in peace Daniel, your work on earth is done. Job well done.
I liked Daniel and enjoyed it when he came to the Downtown Pachyderm, speechless.
All of us in Senate District 11 miss Daniel a great deal. He was honest, hardworking, and really cared for the people in his community. Gone all too soon.
Daniel was a good, good guy. He ALWAYS had a smile on his face. And he was always everywhere. May the Good Lord embrace Daniel and offer his family, friends, and special people in his life comfort during this very difficult time.

Daniel you will be truly missed, you were a true gentleman and larger than life on the 2012 champion when I first met you, when I ran for Brazoria County Tax Assessor you always spoke kind words and I remember every time we did speak you always talked about your children and your beautiful wife. My thoughts and prays go out to them. I know they will remember the great Dad and Husband for many many years to come but will still miss him with all they hearts. RIP my friend.

David, that was simple, yet very well said. Daniel was extremely selfless, and I completely agree that he always put others first. His loyalty, enthusiasm, incredible work ethic, and strong conservative values would have served the SREC extremely well; those qualities certainly enriched the lives of those of us who were fortunate to call him a friend.

Oh My Gosh! I am so shocked, not to mention saddened by this news! Daniel was a wonderful man and his loss is a loss for all Texans and Americans! God sure is calling many good ones home! Prayers said for all those who love Daniel! May they find comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of God!
Daniel was a great man. The GOP and I will miss his selfless efforts to assure a better nation for our children and grandchildren.
