Fernando Herrera, the Republican candidate for the Texas state house district 148 was present with what has become “the norm of his campaign”, a massive group of grassroots volunteers. FORTY –FIVE volunteers came out to support Fernando.
As the old adage goes “they talk the talk, but can they walk the walk?” This group “walked the walk” in the Texas heat. The sea of blue campaign shirts covered both sides of the street overflowing into the crowd. They handed out bottles of cold water, beads and candy for the kids. They answered questions about who is Fernando and what does he represent. They also invited folks to a meet and greet held after the parade at Fiesta En Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant at 3522 Irvington Blvd. More on the meet and greet later. The only other group that rivaled their numbers was the marching band.
Other Republicans in the parade were Tex Christopher, Chris Daniels and walking in the Herrera group were Mr. and Mrs. John Faulk wearing his trademark white shirt. This is not your grandpa’s Republican group. They were led by a Hispanic candidate surrounded by a diverse group of volunteers. There were Rs, Ds and of course Independents in the group. There where folks from all over Harris County plus residents of 148. One man came with his seven children. One lady came with two teenage boys. Do you know how hard it is to get teenage boys to do anything? Debbie Flores aka “Cousin Debbie” brought many of Fernando’s family. Lawrence “L-Rod” Rodriguez had the crowd hopping with his patriotic music much with a “Latino” sound. Mr. and Mrs. Terrence Boggs, and their son attended. Lisa Sowle and Elizabeth Perez represented the LNRC. Randy Kubosh of Red Light Camera fame walked and helped in taking pictures. Randy is also a member of the HCRP Leadership Committee. Fernando also had a large number of family walking beside him. I apologize to all those whose names I failed to mention. Your service was greatly appreciated. Fernando said “Without all the friends, family, and supporters, I’m simply a name on the ballot, but with this type of support, I become a viable candidate.” Thankfully the rain held off till the Fernando Herrera float arrived at the end of the parade.
After the parade most of those that walked and many from the neighborhood went to Fiesta en Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant. The cool air was enjoyed by all. No one was in a hurry to leave and many enjoyed a meal before departing. The service and the food were very good considering that the restaurant was nearly overwhelmed by the numbers of people supporting Fernando.
Some have said “An R has never done well in 148, or J.F. just always seems to win.” Fellow Republicans this is the man who can win the 148. He has the grassroots support, he has the drive and he IS a man of the people. All he needs is a little money to buy a few push cards and make a mailing or two. If you are going to support anyone, Fernando Herrera is the one that deserves your monetary support.
