Being from the ‘right’ side of politics, I often hear from my ‘friends’ that the Democrats in Texas are ‘evil’, or ‘unGodly’. And this thought extends and is magnified to those Democrats at the national level.
I haven’t found that sentiment to be true and I’ve met a lot of Democrats. When someone tells me that, I inevitably think about Wally Kronzer, who ran for the court of appeals on the Democratic ticket. Or former District Clerk Loren Jackson. Or Congressman Gene Green. Or Former Houston City Councilperson Melissa Noriega. Or any number of others. You couldn’t in a million years convince me that these Democrats are ‘unGodly’.
But still the perception persists that you cannot be a Democrat and be a person of faith, specifically a person of the Christian faith.
If you happen to believe in that perception, I would ask you to open your mind and seek the truth. I don’t think that Jesus is a Republican. I think he cared about people, His relationship with them and how they treated other people.
What spurred me to write this? A Tweet by Rep. Jason Villalba lifting up fellow Rep. Terry Canales.
And when I clicked through to Rep. Canales’ Facebook page, I read a beautiful prayer that he had written on behalf of his son.
Since Bebo was two he was diagnosed with a heart defect called coarctation of the aorta. Our family has hoped and prayed that the situation would correct itself, but with every passing follow up, that didnt seem to be the case. This Wednesday my wife and I will travel to Columbus Ohio with him where he will undergo the first of what we are told will be a series of heart surgeries.
I would be less than honest if I said we weren’t racked with fear of the uncertain, and that this hasn’t consumed our every waking moment for the last several months and left us virtually sleepless. But our faith in God is unwavering.
I believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, and I believe in the power of prayer. So I am humbly asking that whomever read this message, please take a moment to pray for my little boy, and that they ask their friends, family, and prayer warriors to do the same. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your time and your prayer means more to us than you will ever know.
Very truly yours,
TERRYPRAYER FOR TERRY ANDRES CANALES
Oh my Jesus, you have said ” truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” You have also said if you ask anything of the father in my name he will give it to you.” Encouraged by your infallible words, …
Behold I knock, I seek, and ask the father in the name of our saviour Jesus Christ for the grace of Terry Andres Canales being healed, that his heart be strong, and that should he require surgery, that you bless and guide the hands of Dr. Cheatham and his entire surgical team. That you surround Terry Andres Canales with your angels, and that his surgery be successful, and that he will awake from that surgery healed and no longer have the need for surgical intervention. In your blessed name I pray. AMEN
That is what life is about. Supporting each other in our times of need, even when we have differences of opinion about the best policies to maximize our human potential, the God-given potential that each of us has.
Thank you Rep. Villalba for letting me know and showing grace in supporting your peer. And Rep. Canales, rest assured that you will have my prayers for your little boy and for your entire family.

Well said David.

Can you be a Democrat and be a Christian? Sure, it’s theoretically possible. But I would hate to be in your shoes on Judgment Day when you have to explain why you supported the legal murder of the unborn in the womb. Does being a Republican make you a Christian? No, of course not. Salvation is only found in Jesus Christ, not in political parties. But let’s just say that the likelihood of finding a representative who is a true believer in Christ is tad higher, shall we say, in one party than the other. As Jesus said, “By their fruits you will know them.”

David Vargha,
If you asked 100 people on the street that question, I’d bet you that the answers would surprise you.
That He did. I find it interesting, given the number of charlatans parading around as righteous within the Repbublican Party, that he preceded that with this:
He also said “Blessed are the peacemakers – they will be called the children of God.”

Thanks for this reminder. It’s folly to argue that elected officials are ungodly. The question is to where in the Hierarchy of Truth they focus their attention, not do they believe and act in accordance with their beliefs.
This was a good reminder we need to all step back and take a deep breath and let the rhetoric cool.

It’s an un-Godly world. Sometimes it’s positively un-Godly. That’s why you should be able to bail out of it once in a while. You’ll get a whole different perspective. If I were a Sophist I’d call it transcendence, but whatever you call it sometimes you have to rise above it all.
If you find yourself so disposed, pray. Psalm 1:2 …”but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” And don’t forget the boy with a heart condition.
