In April 2010, Texas Gubernatorial candidate Bill White spoke at the Texas State Teachers Association Convention. In this video (skip to the 4:25 mark), Bill White told the attendees:
“We can never be as good as we can be if we have college tuitions for four and two year state schools go up by 82{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} under Governor Perry”
The audience applauded Bill White’s statement.
But that was then.
This is now.
In response to Governor Perry’s request on universities developing a bachelors degree program costing less than $10,000 there’s this statement from Mary Aldridge Dean, executive director of the Texas Faculty Association, on the Texas State Teachers Association website:
“…the governor’s proposal for a $10,000 bachelor’s degree doesn’t add up to quality education, thanks to increased student populations and cuts in state higher education funding.
The Texas State Teachers Association is the Texas affiliate of the National Education Association (www.nea.org) headquartered in Washington, D.C. The TSTA was just fine and dandy with candidate Bill White’s support of lowering the cost of college tuition back in April, but now they cry about the sky falling down around them after Governor Perry made a remarkably similar proposal in his State of the State speech.
Yeesh.
BTW, State Senator John Whitmire spoke at that TSTA April 2010 convention.
