1. Who are you, and what are you running for?

My name is Glenn Devlin and I am running for Judge of the 313th District Court. I have the good fortune of coming from a long line of family jurist. My uncle served on the Texas Supreme Court, Chief Justice – 4th Court of Appeals, San Antonio, Texas, was a State District Judge in San Antonio and was also the Dean at Baylor College of Law. My grandfather was a State District Judge in San Antonio and Jourdanton, Texas. My grandfather helped me at a very early age to appreciate the unique role a judge can play in the community.

I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas and served in the Air Force. I was honorably discharged in 1974 and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1976 with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. I returned to Texas and attended South Texas College of Law where I graduated in 1980. I have lived in Houston and practiced law for over 30 years in the juvenile system in Harris County, Texas.

I have been married to my wife, Nancy, for 28 years. We have 3 children, 2 of which are in college and one is a senior at Memorial High School. I have experienced the joys of parenthood together with the challenges and can say that it is a privilege and a joy to mold a young life in a positive way.

2. What kind of cases does this court hear?

This court hears juvenile cases and CPS cases.

3. Why are you running for this particular bench?

I want to make a difference in the lives of children that come to juvenile court. I have practiced law in the juvenile courts for over 30 years and currently sit as a visiting associate judge in the 313th and 315th District Courts. This experience has given me the unique perspective of working with children from both sides of the bench.

4. What are your qualifications for this job?

In addition to being a husband, father of three (two teenage boys and a 21 year old daughter), coach, mentor, veteran and a lawyer, I have practiced CPS and Juvenile law for over 30 years. I sit as an associate judge in the 313th and 315th Juvenile District Courts. I have tried literally 100’s of cases and I am one of only a few “A” rated lawyers practicing in Juvenile court. I, therefore, see the perspective of court from both sides of the bench.

5. Why is this race important?

The Juvenile courts are vital in our community because they involve children and affect the lives of children. In addition, the juvenile court is the first opportunity to not only improve the lives of children, but to make the necessary changes for the child so that he or she does not enter the adult system.

6. Why should people vote for you in November?

I am the candidate with the most experience in the juvenile courts. I have ideas that I will implement to improve not only the system at the juvenile justice center, but the lives of the kids in the system. For example, my “Leadership Friday” court, my expansion of the mentor system and lastly, the “Adopt a Family” program in CPS cases are all designed to help stop the recidivism that we currently see in the juvenile system.

This is a trial court that usually hears civil lawsuits, which are suits for money damages for claims such as negligence, breach of contract, property disputes, fraud, and business disputes.  Additionally, this Court handles various miscellaneous actions such as appeals of property appraisals, petitions to expunge criminal records, applications to change names, and the like.  I can also handle criminal and family cases from time to time.

3. Why are you running for this particular bench?

I am currently serving you as the Judge of the 269^th District Court, and I am running to continue serving our community and bringing prompt, fair justice to the people of Harris County.

I have the broadest, most relevant qualifications for this post and a proven track record for fair, efficient, decisive administration of justice.

5. Why is this race important?

The people of Harris County have the opportunity to retain a decisive, efficient judge.  More lawsuits than usual are being filed in Harris County, and this Court needs a judge who has proven he can not only make fair decisions quickly, but can also ensure that cases are handled more efficiently and at lower expense.  Otherwise, justice will be denied by the delays that result.

6. Why should people vote for you in November?

I am the best-qualified, most decisive, productive, and efficient candidate for this office.  I have adopted procedures that have shortened the time cases await decision and reduced the fees and expenses parties once experienced in suits filed in the 269^th District Court.

Since I became the Judge of the 269^th District Court, the number of pending cases in this Court has shrunk despite a 28{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} spike in the number of lawsuits filed in the Court.  In 2009, I improved productivity by 72{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} and nearly quadrupled the number of jury trials from the previous year.  By boosting productivity, resolving more suits, and shrinking the backlog of cases, I have reduced the cost and expense incurred by parties with cases assigned to this Court.  On top of that, I have eliminated a policy that imposed a fee on each party (often mandatory in other courts) that often ranges from $500 to $1,500.

So, the voters of Harris County can look to my proven track record for assurance that by electing me, their tax dollars will be used wisely by a hardworking, no-nonsense Judge dedicated to ensuring the fair, efficient, and speedy administration of justice.

1. Who are you and what are you running for?

My name is Susan Brown and I am the Judge of the 185th District Court.

2. What kind of cases does this Court hear?

The 185th is a Criminal District Court. I preside over all levels of felony cases from Capital Murder to drug possession, theft cases over 1,500 dollars, all types of child abuse cases and most assault cases.

3. Why are you running for this particular bench?

I am running for the 185th because I have been the elected Judge in this court for the last twelve years. I have the judicial experience to keep the 185th running in the fair and efficient manner that parties have come to expect since I took the bench.

4. What are your qualifications?

I am a graduate of Texas A&M University Class of ’82 with a degree in Elementary Education.

I graduated from South Texas College of Law in 1985 and have been a licensed attorney since that time. During law school I was employed as an intern with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Grand Jury Division. Following my graduation from law school I was employed as an Assistant District Attorney in the Collin County District Attorney’s Office where I handled both felony and misdemeanor cases. In 1988 I was hired by John B. Holmes Jr. as an Assistant District Attorney in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. I served in that capacity reaching the rank of District Court Chief until July 1997. As an Assistant District Attorney I tried many serious cases including five capital murders. In 1999 I became the Judge of the 185th District Court. I have spent my entire legal career in the practice of criminal law.

5. Why is this race important?

I believe it is important to have judges who know the law and who will follow the law. In the last several years we have seen what happens when judges refuse to follow the law or who follow their own agendas. My race is also important because continuity is important. All parties involved in a criminal case deserve to have their case heard in an efficient timely manner. When a new judge takes the bench there is a steep learning curve and cases become backlogged due to lack of experience. Justice delayed means Justice denied.

6. Why should people vote for you in November?

I am an efficient and hard working judge. Since my election to the bench in 1999 I have disposed of over 60,000 cases. I have presided over more than 300 jury trials. In the last several years I have tried more cases than any other criminal district judge. Due to my hard work I have one of the lowest dockets of the criminal district courts. I am also involved in several innovative sentencing options for women and young offenders. Women Helping Ourselves and Change Thorough Intervention. As was one of the original stakeholders in the WHO Program, a comprehensive substance abuse treatment program that includes life skills, parenting and employment preparation our goal is to address the problems that cause woman to become involved in the criminal justice system and prepare them to return to our community as productive citizens. My CTI docket is a hands on approach to working with probations to keep them from re-offending or being sent to prison for failure to meet the conditions of their probation. This intensive program provides substance abuse, if necessary, job training and life skills and constant contact with the court and the probation department.

Due to my extensive judicial experience, my work ethic and my ability to find innovative solutions to situations that come before me. I am the most qualified person in this race.

There is an old saying that if something is not broken you don’t need to fix it. The 185th is an efficient hardworking court. I am a Judge who follows the law and works to keep our community safe. I ask for your vote on November 2nd.

My name is John Clinton. I’m the Republican running for Judge, Harris County Criminal Court-at-Law No. 4.

2. What kind of cases does this court hear?

This court is one of 15 such misdemeanor courts in the county. It hears and has jurisdiction over cases involving Class A and Class B misdemeanors. That means there are a lot of driving while intoxicated cases, drug cases, vehicle thefts, vehicle burglaries and domestic violence cases, for example. More than 80,000 cases were assigned to these misdemeanor courts last year.

3. Why are you running for this particular bench?

I’ve spent my entire life serving and protecting our community. I was a Houston police officer for 30 years. I spent 23 of those years as a Detective Sergeant in the Robbery Division. As a police officer, I worked my way through college and law school and my wife and I started a successful law firm together. But I have always seen working as a judge as a continuation of what I can do to keep serving. I love the law and want to combine my love for it with the practical knowledge of the criminal justice system I gained on the streets.

4. What are your qualifications for this job?

30 years, Houston Police Department; 23 years, Detective Sergeant, Robbery Division; Criminal Justice Degree, University of Houston; Law Degree, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University; extensive private practice experience in preparing and trying cases; extensive experience preparing criminal cases; taught courses to law enforcement officers on Code of Criminal Procedure and courtroom procedure.

5. Why is this race important?

This race is important because I see these as gateway courts. Often, young criminals make their first stop here. We have to make a firm impression on them. We must also protect the rights of both the accused and the victims. I think that often we look beyond the victims and what they are going through when crime enters their lives. These courts play a vital role in keeping our community safe and secure.

6. Why should people vote for you in November?

I am the candidate with the practical experience and the perspective we need in this court. I will always look out for victims and protect the Constitution. These courts play a vital role in protecting our community. That’s something I’ve been doing my entire adult life.

I am Hon. Lynn Bradshaw Hull. I am running for District Judge of the 280th Judicial District Court, the newly designated domestic violence court.

2. What kind of cases does this court hear?

In October, 2009, the 280th District Court became the first court in the State of Texas designated for domestic violence cases. This court hears applications for protective orders against family violence and dating violence; and any matter involving custody of a minor child if one parent is alleged to have caused the death of another parent and there is a history of domestic violence in the parents’ relationship. Subject to judicial discretion and resources, the court may also hear divorce and custody cases in which a court has made an affirmative finding of family violence involving both parties, or a protective order has been issued under Title 4, Family Code, involving both parties.

3. Why are you running for this particular bench?

This unique court offers the greatest opportunity for me to continue meaningful judicial service. My judicial expertise and personal family experience with domestic violence issues made the 280th the right choice in running for another judicial bench.

4. What are your qualifications for this job?

Beginning private practice in 1984, I represented clients in predominantly civil and domestic relations, including domestic violence matters, and served as a certified mediator until elected to the bench.

In 1994, I was first elected to serve as Judge of Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 3, and re-elected in 1998 and 2002. In 2006, I was elected District Judge of the 80th Judicial District Court where I also volunteered to assist the family courts by presiding in domestic violence matters.

I presided fairly in the disposition of more than 60,000 cases, including over 500 jury trials. I am dual-certified by the Texas College for Judicial Studies as a specialist in Civil Jurisdiction and General Jurisdiction, both of which include domestic violence training. Less than ten judges in Texas have achieved dual certification. I have been recognized as “Judge of the Year” by Peace Officers Looking Into Courthouse Excellence (P.O.L.I.C.E. Inc.), and honored with two Texas State Bar Presidential Commendations for judicial leadership. Since 2009, I have served as a visiting judge and mediator.

I am a native Texan, married to Christopher Bradshaw Hull for over thirty-one years and we have two grown, married children and one grandchild.

5. Why is this race important?

No one is immune from being a victim of domestic violence or being accused of domestic violence. Domestic Violence is a societal problem that knows no boundaries. According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, 74{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} of all Texans have either themselves, a family member and/or a friend have experienced some form of domestic violence. The 280th District Court, as the newly designated Domestic Violence Court, is designed to deter domestic violence, improve victim safety and enhance accountability.

6. Why should people vote for you in November?

It is anticipated that 3,000 applications for protective orders will be filed annually. Having one court for these cases provides the opportunity for reducing misdemeanors, felonies and deaths involving domestic violence through immediate responsiveness, intervention and consistency. I am the only candidate with fourteen years of trial judge expertise, including domestic violence matters, and court administration duties involving heavy dockets. My skills as a trial judge and reputation as a proven neutral uniquely qualify me to interface with representatives of the District Attorney’s office, Family Protective Services, AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence) and private litigators while continuing to safeguard the process in managing these hearings. I am a uniquely qualified judge for this unique court.

1. Who are you, and what are you running for?

My name is Lisa Millard and I am running for re-election to the 310th Family District Court in Harris County. I am a native Houstonian, and grew up in the Spring Branch area. I am the proud mother of one daughter, and the proud grandmother of a granddaughter and a grandson.

2. What kind of cases does this court hear?

Family Courts hear a wide array of issues ranging from divorce cases involving child custody matters; down to complex property issues. We also hear Texas Department of Family Protective Services (commonly referred to as CPS cases), as well as paternity cases, adoptions and child support matters. There are many complex matters handled in the Family Court that require an experienced, knowledgeable judge.

3. Why are you running for this particular bench?

I want to continue to work to help our families and children here in Harris County, Texas. I strive to carefully consider the impact of litigation on families and children. I treat the parties and attorneys with respect and dignity. I try to be creative and work with families to resolve their problems. This includes being more flexible and willing to try new and different alternatives to assist the people who appear in the family courts.

4. What are your qualifications for this job?

My experience as Judge in the Family Courts for almost 16 years is clearly my best qualification. However my life experiences also help guide me. My life has not always been easy, but the many experiences and relationships I have encountered over the years has helped me better understand many issues that come before the Court. I am a breast cancer survivor; I am also a mother, grandmother, sister and daughter. I raised my daughter as a single parent, while attending college and law school.

5. Why is this race important?

How many have had a personal experience (or a friend, family member or co-worker) with the Family Courts ? The stakes are high for those whose circumstances will lead them to the Family Courts. I have heard over 20,000 cases while serving the people of Harris County the past 15 years. I want to continue to use my experience to help expedite the process but also to use my knowledge of the complex issues to help protect and assist the families of Harris County.

I am the best-qualified candidate for Judge of the 310 Family Court. I believe a good Judge is not born, but rather is forged by good attorneys, study of the law and practice at the craft. It is my goal to craft solutions that are fair, workable and within the statutes of the law.
