The Morales campaign is focusing on the fact that current the CD-29 incumbent, Rep. Gene Green, twice voted for the job killing Cap and Trade bill. What better group to target than those working in the petrochemical industry? “Save Your Job” the sign said. That is an attention getter these days, don’t you think?
The signs said to go and meet Roy at “the store”. The “store” being the Sheldon Food Mart, a popular after work stopping place for the hundreds of shift workers that form the base of Houston’s economy, the very ones that will be out of jobs if the Democrats force Cap and Trade on us.
Now, there is retail politics and then there is retail politics in the brutal afternoon heat of a Houston summer. And it was brutal. The thermometer on the dash read 98 when I stepped out of the car and was hit with a blast of heat. And the heat wasnt’t the only thing boiling:
This guy refused to shake Roy’s hand on the way into the store, making sure Roy knew he was angry. At first, I thought he was a Gene Green supporter but when he came out of the store, he had calmed down enough to talk to Roy. Turns out he is just angry at the whole political world right now, telling Roy that it would do no good to replace Green because Roy would soon be just as corrupt. I see a lot of that on the campaign trail, anger that is. People oftentimes don’t even know why they are angry or who they are angry at, they are just angry. I gave him a card, perhaps he’ll log on and tell us why he is so angry.
Now this guy is most definitely NOT a Gene Green supporter:
And he made certain that we knew it with a string of colorful expletives. I’ll let you use your imagination on that one.
There’s volunteers and then there are volunteers. Check this guy out:
That’s right, the guy is standing on the side of the road, in 100 degree plus heat, no shade in sight, waving a Roy Morales sign. It is easy to become cynical when you think about politics, but this is really what America is about. There is nothing in it personally for this volunteer. He just knows that the country is ailing and this is what he can do to help fix it. Awesome.
Here are a few more pictures:
And I really like this one:
Why do I like that one? Notice that the volunteers are packing up. See that red truck on the bottom right? With a head in it, enjoying the air conditioning? That’d be the candidate. 😉
One more thing. Yes this is politics and yes Gene Green needs to be retired from office. He was a good congressman at one time but lost his way over the years. Can you imagine putting people in your own district out of work simply because you like your leadership role? But that aside, we have to remember that we are all just people making our way through life. Gene and Helen remain good people at heart, I simply believe that and have said it time and time again. In case you haven’t heard, Helen was involved in a tragic accident last week, which resulted in the loss of an eye. Let’s all set politics aside for just a moment and say a prayer for her and Gene as they recover.
