This is the second hit on Larry Taylor by the Conservative Voters of Texas:
Conservative Voters of Texas
For Immediate ReleaseContact: Mark McCaigLARRY TAYLOR BANKROLLED BY IMMIGRATION REFORM OPPONENT– Construction Boss Who Killed the Conservative “Sanctuary Cities” Bill Is Largest Donor to Taylor Campaign-HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 2, 2012) – Construction Boss Bob Perry, who many credit with killing the “Sanctuary Cities” bill favored by grassroots conservatives across Texas during the last legislative session, is the largest donor to State Representative Larry Taylor’s State Senate campaign according to recently filed campaign finance reports. These disclosures indicate that Perry and his wife together contributed $70,000 to Taylor’s campaign.Mark McCaig, President of Conservative Voters of Texas, stated “Although the passage of the “Sanctuary Cities” bill was a top priority for Texas conservatives, it died on Larry Taylor’s watch as Chairman of the House Republican Caucus. Bob Perry’s massive donations to Larry Taylor are yet more evidence that Rep. Taylor is out of touch with Texas conservatives and will not represent their views in the Texas Senate.” Conservative Voters of Texas recently began a campaign to educate voters in Senate District 11 about Rep. Taylor’s support of in-state tuition for illegal aliens. The ad can be viewed online at www.whylarrywhy.com .Bob Perry’s opposition to the “Sanctuary Cities” bill is well documented. The Houston Chronicle reported on June 25, 2011 that Perry had hired a lobbying firm to help kill the legislation.[1] It has also been reported that Bob Perry personally lobbied against the “Sanctuary Cities” legislation.[2]McCaig added “Voters are sick and tired of politicians like Larry Taylor that do the dirty work for special interests and wealthy donors like Bob Perry. Senate District 11 deserves a State Senator that will fight for conservative principles and not give in to pressure from powerful lobbyists.”###
Thus far Taylor has responded by attacking the President of CVT, Mark McCaig. Maybe this time he’ll tell voters why he supports illegal immigration or why he doesn’t.

Why would anyone give credence to ANYTHING said by Mark McCaig?
McCaig is an associate at Steve Mostyn’s law firm. This is the same Steve Mostyn who has spent over $11 million in the last election cycle attempting to defeat Republicans all over the state of Texas. This is the same Steve Mostyn who has hosted Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi in his home. Now, Steve Mostyn’s puppet has a new PAC, Conservative Voters of Texas, and they are hell bent on trashing Rep. Larry Taylor.
A simple look at the actual voting record will reveal McCaig’s attacks to be false. He initially attacked Rep. Taylor for voting for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants when Rep. Taylor wasn’t even serving in the Legislature. Let me repeat this important point. McCaig criticized Taylor for a vote that occurred before he was elected. McCaig went on to criticize Taylor for voting for SB 1528, claiming this bill was a “vote for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants”. The bill analysis and summary prove that the bill actually restricted the ability for illegal immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition. Rep. Taylor had a choice to vote to make it easier for illegal immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition or to make it harder. He chose to make it harder. It should be noted that every single Republican in the Texas House of Representatives voted for this bill and it was signed by Governor Perry.
This obfuscation just reinforces the point that McCaig and his fake PAC “Conservative Voters of Texas” are a puppet of Steve Mostyn, a personal injury trial lawyer who is engaged in a personal vendetta against Rep. Larry Taylor for his leadership on lawsuit reform.
Mark McCaig says
C’mon, Matt, you should be able to do better than that. It’s amazing that Larry’s record is so bad and indefensible to conservatives that your “response” is the best you can come up with.
You still ignore the fact that Larry voted for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. If anything, SB 1528 actually made it EASIER for illegal immigrant students to qualify for in-state tuition. Even if what you say is correct (even though your assertions are false), why didn’t Larry take that opportunity to take a stand and say that illegal immigrants should not qualify for in-state tuition, period? You can make up facts excuses as much as you would like, but that doesn’t hide the fact that voters in SD 11 know that illegal immigrants can qualify for in-state tuition and are angry about it. You are upset that somebody is finally getting the word out that Larry helped make this happen.
You also totally ignore the fact, which anybody can verify by looking at TEC reports, that Larry is being bankrolled to an extraordinary degree by Bob Perry- the man responsible for the death of the “Sanctuary Cities” bill. The grassroots conservatives in SD 11 who know Larry best are vigorously supporting his opponents because they know he is bought and paid for by special interests and big donors like Bob Perry. These conservative activists want a State Senator who will represent them and their values, and not be an errand boy for homebuilders, the insurance industry, nuclear waste monopolies, corporate welfare recipients, and the litany of other special interests that Larry Taylor has sold himself to. I am proud to stand alongside them and educate voters in SD 11 about who Larry Taylor really is and why he is not fit to serve in the Texas Senate.
My work and employer is irrelevant to Larry supporting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and his being the poster boy for politicans that are wholly owned subsidiaries of the lobby. But I will address it anyways. My boss is indeed a Democrat. I am a lifelong, active conservative Republican that has great disdain for the policies of Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama. I have fought, and will continue to fight, the agenda promoted by them and promote the principles of liberty articulted in the US Constitution.
As part of my conservative activism, I have also fought to lessen the influence of special interests that seek to hijack the Republican Party and the conservative movement to promote a self-interested special interest agenda that doesn’t even closely resemble a philosophy of limited government or ideological conservatism. Instead, I want principled conservatives in office who represent what is best for Texas and the USA, not what a small group of lobbyists or big donors want. Because I have been so outspoken, I have drawn the ire of these powerbrokers and their elected enablers, such as Larry Taylor. The vitriol with which you attack me coupled with your inability to defend Larry Taylor’s decade long record in Austin speaks volumes about what you and Larry are truly about.
Matt Welch says
A true conservative would not be working for Steve Mostyn, a man who spent $11 million last cycle working to defeat Republicans all over Texas. He is the financial sugar-daddy of the Texas Democratic Party and you are doing his bidding.
Your bogus attack on Taylor regarding immigration is laughable. Larry opposes in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and wasn’t even in the Legislature when the vote occurred to create the program.
The other vote you referenced, SB 1528, made it more difficult for illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition, not easier. By your logic, you should also be attacking Governor Perry and every single Republican in the Texas House of Representatives because they all supported SB 1528.
I have no vitriol toward you Mark, just the truth. But I’m sure it feels like vitriol. I’d probably get my feelings hurt too if someone found out I was working for Steve Mostyn and serving as his puppet.
Mark McCaig says
Matt- I don’t do anybody’s bidding and I’m not, nor will I ever be, anybody’s puppet. Anybody who knows me knows I act on principle, even if they disagree with me. I’m proud of the work my coworkers and I do to help families (Republican and Democrat alike) and small businesses who were mistreated by their insurance company in their time of need. This work is not an endorsement of contributions to Democrats. If I wanted to sell out or be somebody’s puppet, I would have sold out to the same special interests Larry has. It would have been a lot easier for me. I’m not saying anything now that I didn’t say or believe long before I ever worked for Mostyn.
Every member who voted for SB 1528 should be ashamed of their vote. Larry’s actions speak louder than your words, though. If he truly opposed in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, how come he did absolutely nothing during his decade in the house to end this practice? How come he didn’t use SB 1528 as a way to end in-state tuition for illegal immigrants instead of continuing it? How come on Larry Taylor’s watch as Chairman of the House Republican Caucus he stood with his big donors instead of grassroots conservatives and let the Sanctuary cities bill die? You know as well as I do that the reason Texas allows in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and refuses to take action to end Sanctuary cities is because of politicians exemplified by Larry Taylor who are more concerned with protecting their donor’s pocketbooks than representing average Texans. This is exactly why we need a principled conservative elected from SD 11, not Larry Taylor.

Matt: the readers of this blog are smart enough to understand the significance of redistricting. You’re questioning the Republican bona fides of McCaig, a messenger, but in the 2011 Texas House redistricting, why did Larry Taylor, a Republican leader, chose to protect the district of his Galveston County neighbor, the Democrats’ liberal House leader, Craig Eiland ? Do you think if the tables were turned a Democrat leader would have given Republicans the same deal?
Every Texas House Republican in the state with a strong district used the once a decade redistricting process to help the Republican majority. They sacrificed Republican-minded voters to help weaker districts. On the other hand, Larry Taylor traded Craig Eiland more African American voters in return for more Republican voters. Larry’s district went from being a very safe Republican district of about 65{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} to a very fat Republican district of over 70{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}. Both districts could have easily been drawn at 60{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} Republican to elect 2 Republicans. If all Texas House Republicans did what Larry did, liberals would rule because Republican districts would be too few to form a majority. Also, by moving African Americans from his district to Craig’s district, Larry accelerated the day that Craig’s district will be forever protected by the Voting Rights Act (since under current law anytime a majority minority district is established, it is forever protected). So no matter how many Republican-minded voters move into Galveston County, Craig Eiland will always be there.
