One of the bright spots in the Harris County Republican Party is the quality of the candidates that we have for the various civil court benches. One of the finest people I met during the 2012 election season was Michael Landrum, who ran for the 129th Civil District Court and came up just short of winning in November.

So I wake up this morning and check Facebook and find out that Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Michael to the vacant bench on the 113th Civil District Court. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for Michael and his wife, Mary Grace, as well as the citizens of Harris County. Sometimes the good guys do win!

In the race for the 129th back in November, Michael lost by 4,071 votes out of 1,135,293 total votes cast in that race. About one-third of one percent. Those races were so close that some of the Republican candidates were bitter and started finger-pointing, rather than accept that they did their best and the Democrats turned out more people. Obviously, Michael was disappointed with the loss but handled it with grace, issuing this statement:

Thank you to all my friends for your prayers, support and encouragement during the recent, very long, campaign for judge. Mary Grace and I want you all to know that we consider that we are big winners because of all of you, despite the results at the polls.

May God bless you all.

Over the course of that long campaign, I got to know Michael pretty well and also had the pleasure of meeting his wife, Mary Grace, many times. They are the epitome of what we call “good people”. They volunteer their time in many areas of the community and have demonstrated time and time again that they are people of outstanding personal integrity.

I can’t wait to see Michael in person next week and say “Congratulations Judge Landrum”!
