Because I was like most voters, not paying much attention, raising a family, working at the American dream, being involved at church, commenting on national politics – in general, just being a typical US citizen. And then, out of the blue, I realized that all politics really are local and that if we want to change our future, we have to start locally. So I looked.
And I found rot and filth in the very party that claimed to represent my Christian faith. I was appalled at what passed for civility – rumor-mongering, hate-speech, gossip – not exactly what I had in mind when I began to get out and meet people in the party. So I wasn’t much surprised when a guy named Barack Obama led a sweep of Harris County.
At first I blamed it all on the pay to play industry that had built up around the HCRP – Lowry, Hotze, Polland. And then I realized that they were just a symptom of poor leadership, so I blamed it all on Jared Woodfill. And then I realized that he had many skills but had surrounded himself with inept people, so I blamed them. But I finally figured it out – the voters were to blame. They put Mr. Woodfill in office. They allowed him to surround himself with ineptness. They LIKE and ENJOY gossip and rumor – that was probably the hardest one for me to accept but accept it I do.
So the only way to correct the party is for the voters to correct it. We need enough people to say STOP. Just stop. And start focusing on winning again. We can no longer win on the backs of white suburbanites that are aging rapidly. We must expand the base of the party to include minorities that agree with us on most issues by telling them we want them. By reaching out into their communities. Not with bicycles or turkeys but with action and activities!
Some say that we are left to choose between the status quo and promise but I must disagree. We have Mr. Woodfill’s record to review, pick apart, dissect: so in that sense, we do have a status quo candidate, although status quo would be an improvement because the party is declining so rapidly. We have Mr. Hubbard’s promises but really we have more than that. We have his work in the community over the last year and a half. He has been doing the work of reaching out, including those that feel excluded from the party. He has gone where no HCRP chair has gone before. He doesn’t just offer promises, he has demonstrated that he is willing to get in the trenches and work. To increase precinct level participation. To increase minority participation.
That is why I strongly urge you to vote tomorrow for Ed Hubbard. Is he perfect? No, he isn’t. But he is a hard working, committed to Republican revival conservative. And that is good enough for me.
Listen for yourself, research every thing and do it everywhere, and I think that you will come to the same conclusion I did.
