Jerry Eversole, HCRP Ethics, Question 4

The question asked:

Do you think that Commissioner Eversole’s solution, appointing Robert Eckels to oversee his finances, is the correct course of action?

The candidates answers (click on their name or picture to go to their campaign website):

Jared Woodfill – No Response

Paul Simpson – Commissioner Eversole has sought legal counsel and professional assistance, revised his procedures and practices, and engaged former County Judge Robert Eckels to correct and handle future campaign finances. Rather than one person trying to decree the correctness of this overall approach, Republican primary voters should and will decide if the way Commissioner Eversole has tackled this issue will be sufficient.

Ed Hubbard – Having read the TEC decision, and having assessed the nature of Commissioner Eversole’s acknowledged mistakes, I believe putting his campaign finances in independent hands was a good decision.

Don Large – I think that action was a good step, but it does not correct the impression in the minds of voters that certain Republican candidates and/or elected officials feel that they do not have to follow the law or that they can be ignorant of the law.  Any first year law student taking criminal law can tell you that ignorance of the law is no excuse.  I wholeheartedly agree.

Once again, I want to thank each of the gentlemen that responded. They certainly didn’t have to but I do think that the answers that they provided will give voters insight into their vision for the party. I hope to continue this dialogue with them in the coming months as voters prepare for one of the most critical primary elections for Harris County Republicans in many years.
