If I had to guess, Jack O’Connor would be one of those guys that, after taking a standardized personality test, would be placed in the top percentile of the “Quick Learner” category because when I first met this novice politician, he was…a novice. No more. If nothing else, the brutal Republican primary and much criticism from jerks like me (his words, not mine) have toughened and polished him to the point that I think he has a real shot to upset Hubert Vo.
His campaign is one of three state races in Harris County that I think have a chance of upsetting the incumbent, the other two being Sarah Davis in 134 and Fernando Herrera in 148. They will remain the underdogs until they actually win but all three campaigns have similar traits: dedicated, committed, energetic candidates, organization that is top notch, and an outstanding field team of volunteer supporters. You won’t see these guys advertising on Craigslist for paid blockwalkers, I guarantee you.
A big part of the reason that I think Jack has a legitimate shot is, as noted above, his ability to learn quickly and adapt to his surroundings. He has a huge office and is coordinating his efforts with many different candidates around the city, as you can see in the photos below. I’m sure he would give much of that credit to consultant Jessica Colon, who is really on a roll right now.
I think the pictures tell the story better than I could but first listen to new Texas GOP Chair Steve Munisteri give his reasoning for a possible upset in this race.
