Precinct 2 County Commissioner Jack Morman, Jr. hosted a well-attended fundraiser for La Porte City Council At-Large B Candidate Les Bird Tuesday evening at the Texan Bar and Grill on Spencer Highway. The crowd was a mix of local politicians, business owners, community activists, and friends of Mr. Bird.
During Commissioner Morman's introduction of the candidate, he noted that Mr. Brid has been very involved in La Porte:
- Served on the Executive Board with the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce
- La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program
- La Porte Citizens Police Academy
- Current Member of City of La Porte Planning and Zoning Commission
- Current Member of City of La Porte Civil Service Commission
- Served on La Porte ISD Bond and Building Improvement Initiative
- Little League and Pony League baseball coach
- Little League football coach
- Member of Texas Chemical Council and Association of Chemical Industry of Texas
I knew Les was active but dang, that is a lot of stuff. After Commissioner Morman's remarks, Les told the assembled some of the things he would like to pursue as a council member:
- Quality of Life for La Porte residents
- Growth within the city is important; responsible growth without sacrificing our rich history is essential.
- Improve traffic flow and safety
- Continued Drainage Improvement Programs
- Coordinate efforts with the Harris County Flood Control District
- Work on funding assistance from Harris County and FEMA
- Improved City Services
- Provide competitive salaries, training, technology, and equipment
- Efficient City Government
- Run the city like a business—accountable to taxpayers like a corporation is to its stockholders
- Sustain and Attract Businesses and Jobs
- Improve communications between the city and local business
- Seek a friendlier business environment
Some of the attendees were former La Porte Mayor Barry Beasley, former Clear Lake Area Republicans President Richard Risinger, current CLAR Treasurer Daniel McCool, current La Porte City Council member Mike Clausen, CLAR officer David Janda, and Commissioner Morman's lovely wife, Andi.
