Deja Vu All Over Again: Eric Story to Challenge Gene Green

Mr. Story is the second candidate that has told me they were definitely in the race, joining Frank Mazzapica. I have tried for about a month to confirm the candidacy of Jim Serwan, whom I met at a Gene Green Town Hall meeting in Baytown. Mr. Serwan does have a website of sorts set up, so perhaps he is running, but in several emails he continues to tell me he is still exploring he possibility.

As I mentioned, Mr. Story has been decisively defeated twice previously. He thinks that Mr. Green is vulnerable in this election cycle for several reasons. First, the demographics have of the gerrymandered district have shifted slightly due to growth in the outlying areas. Second, the overall disillusionment of the electorate with President Obama’s liberal agenda. Third, Mr. Green’s votes in favor of the healthcare bill and the Cap/Trade bill. You can find his campaign website here: An American Story.

In speaking with him tonight, he seemed especially excited that Bill Drout, President of the Cherry Tree Republicans, created a Draft Eric Story for Congress Facebook page and he is very optimistic that he can raise the funds necessary to compete. First, however, he has to make it out of the primary. It should be an interesting several months watching these guys compete – will they go after the base, which is the traditional logic, or will they begin to reach out to non-traditional voters and try to expand the party? My guess is that they will focus on the base, which will hurt the eventual winner in November 2010.

At any rate, good luck and may the right candidate win!
