HD134 Heats Up
Premier Conservative Watchdog Group, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, Endorse Bonnie Parker over Incumbent in HD134 Race
Harris County, TX – Yesterday Bonnie Parker, HD134 candidate of Houston, received the endorsement of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility. The group is a premier conservative leader on the state level. The endorsement comes in one of the Legislature’s most competitive races where Republican incumbent Sarah Davis is facing a stiff primary challenge from long-time Republican activist Bonnie Parker.
As a respected Conservative leader and long-time participant in Republican Party politics, Parker commented on the endorsement, “The support of Michael Quinn Sullivan and Texans for Fiscal Responsibility means a great deal to me. My interview with them was lengthy and intense and we covered topics ranging from education to the budget to transportation.”
Parker continued, “…some believe that I’m only in this race because Sarah is a pro-choice Republican. While that’s part of my motivation, it is only one part. The fact is her record is weak on a multitude of issues and her accessibility to the constituents in our District leaves much to be desired. Nevertheless, my team and I are keeping the focus of this race on my record and the skill-set that I bring to the table…and residents in 134 are responding positively.”
With an emphasis on this past Legislative Session, Bonnie Parker is running on a platform that she feels adequately addresses the ‘defining issues’ that she has identified in HD 134, including ‘wise spending and planning for the future of Texas’.
House District 134 covers parts of Southwest Houston and includes the Cities of Bellaire, West University Place, and Southside Place. The District is often perceived as a ‘swing district’ but in the ‘up ballot’ races its precincts showed a strong majority for Republican candidates during the 2012 cycle.
Bonnie is a retired teacher, widow and mother of two adult children. She has been a conservative activist in Harris County for thirty years and she is pro-life. Since leaving education, Bonnie has been involved in economic development in Eastern Uganda, Africa through the Ugandan nonprofit, Lodoi Development Fund. Bonnie has coached YMCA soccer, judged for Odyssey of the Mind, and served on the Georgetown Square Townhouse Board of Directors and the Bellaire Recycling Committee. She is currently a member of the Harris County Republican Party Training and Development Committee.

This is significant. Whatever you think about Mike Sullivan and his group, they do not fund candidates that have no chance of winning. As I said earlier, this race is going to be closer than a lot of people think. Remember, Rep. Sarah Davis beat Parker in 2010 by just over 700 votes. Redistricting has added more Republican votes to HD134 since that primary.
I had an opportunity to sit down with Parker and discuss her race and reasons for running in depth. She is not a one trick pony and her economic philosophy and general attitude towards reducing government regulations on business is going to be attractive to a lot of the Republicans in HD134. I’ll have more on our discussion in a separate post.
