On Saturday morning, I received this email, letting me know that the gap was closing between Sen. Boxer and her Republican opponent, Carly Fiorina:

Subject: Dead heat
Dear Friend,
You can use whatever term you like.
Dead heat. Tossup. Neck-and-neck.
The Field Poll just released its new poll on our race, and it shows Barbara Boxer leading Carly Fiorina by just three points — that’s within the margin of error. And that means our race is now too close to call.
If anyone was taking our victory for granted — well, this news should be a wake-up call. We don’t have a vote or a moment to spare. Barbara needs us to stand up for her now.
Contribute $5 now and help us fight back against Fiorina’s challenge today!
Our opponents spent the last 18 months attacking Barbara every day, and that’s taken a toll.
We’ve already seen that Carly Fiorina is ready to say and do anything to win — whether it’s dressing someone up in a demon sheep costume, trying to spin her own failed record as CEO of HP as a credential for election, or dismissing Californians’ concerns about climate change and clean energy as being “worried about the weather.”
But the fact is, Fiorina is sitting on millions of dollars from her failed stint as HP’s CEO. Now, with this poll showing the race essentially tied, she could start spending those millions anytime to distort the Boxer record and pretend her record of layoffs and failure at HP never happened.
I’m going to tell it to you straight: we’re under 50{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} of the vote and our opponent is at our heels. We need to hold on to our base of support and reach those undecided voters with Barbara Boxer’s story of accomplishment and her vision for the future. If we don’t stand up for Barbara now, we could find ourselves in a world of hurt in November.
We knew this would be a tough race, and we knew we would have to work hard to make sure Barbara Boxer is re-elected. I can tell you that our campaign team at HQ and our supporters all over the state are working every day to get our story out and build a massive organization to get out the vote.
I’ve been telling the press and the pundits that I’m confident that, despite these poll numbers, we have the grassroots support to win in November.
Prove me right.
Contribute to Barbara Boxer’s campaign now.
Thank you so much for your support of Barbara Boxer.
Sincerely,

Yesterday afternoon, I received the following:
Dear Friend,
Over the weekend, I told you about the latest Field Poll showing Barbara Boxer in a statistical tie with Carly Fiorina. Now, we have further confirmation of just what a serious challenge we are facing.
Yesterday, SurveyUSA released their latest California Senate poll — and it is more confirmation that the race is now too close to call. Fiorina is actually ahead of Barbara by two points, 47{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} – 45{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}. Although this is within the margin of error, there’s no question that we are in the toughest Boxer campaign ever.
I know that we can win this, but we need your help. If you’ve been waiting on the sidelines, now is the time to show your support. Without it, we could be facing a very steep climb come November.
Thank you for your continued support of Barbara Boxer. We can’t do this without you.
Sincerely,

Now, wouldn’t it be seriously cool if that trend held and California elected a Republican Senator? Talk about a game changer. Here’s hoping.
