So it was disappointing to see Roy Morales’ name on the list of brothel customers. I suppose it shouldn’t have blindsided me like it did; many, many people spoke ill of Mr. Morales’ self-aggrandizing ways but I didn’t listen because I had, for the most part, seen nothing but good things in personal interactions with him. Heck, I even wrote about them and still admire him for standing up to the “powers” that desperately wanted him to endorse Gene Locke.
And honestly, I can see why he entered the CD-29 fray even though he doesn’t have a clue about the district, as I noted after his performance in the only candidate forum that I’ve seen. After losing yet another election and not kowtowing to the “powers that be”, he was likely to fade into the sunset even though his name recognition was very high, thanks to the good showing in the Houston Mayoral race and the Annise Parker mailout. The two main candidates in the 29 race, Eric Story and Frank Mazzapica, had not raised a lot of money and I’m sure that Roy thought he could wade through and win easily.
That remains to be seen. Eric and Frank have worked very hard for over a year at building up a base of support. In Eric’s case, the infrastructure from his two previous runs was still in place, although it was obviously ineffective at the ultimate goal of beating Gene Green. Of course, he had zero support from the Harris County Republican Party and was on his own those years. If voters put Jared Woodfill aside this year, I guarantee you that Ed Hubbard or Paul Simpson will not let that happen again.
Bottom line is that I think it is premature to think that Roy can buy an endorsement from an demonstrably ineffective political consultant and walk away with a win in a district that he doesn’t know, doesn’t live in, and frankly doesn’t have a clue about. I used to live in that district and wouldn’t really care that Roy’s grandmother lived in Galveston during the great hurricane. I’d care a great deal more that he didn’t know, at the forum I attended, that the Port of Houston had already expanded into my neighborhood and wrecked the property values.
Enough on Roy and his trying to buy an election. Although I wonder who funded his endorsement purchase. I surely hope he didn’t put it on his credit card.
Like I said earlier, politicians often repeat the past. No better example of this than what Lowry did for Dan Huberty. Seriously, check this out (sorry for the file size but you’ll see why):
Heh. February 2006 – Dan Patrick. February 2010 – Dan Huberty. Hey, first name’s Dan, why not? I wonder how much that cost Huberty? Dan Patrick spent a total of $27,500 on the puke Lowry during his campaign. Don’t believe me? Click here and here.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the HCRP cleaned it’s image up and started winning elections again? A good place to start is for you, citizen voter, to choose someone besides Huberty and Morales. There are good choices on the ballot that didn’t fall for the shadow standing under the red light.
