Non-Union Walmart Contributes to Houston Union Pension Performance

In its recently published annual report, the Houston Municipal Employee Pension System explained the total investment return for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010 was 12.2{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986}. Page 24 of the document (here) reveals an overview of the investment returns in each investment class.

The System’s investment in US Equities, specifically the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 Index, provided a 15.7{997ab4c1e65fa660c64e6dfea23d436a73c89d6254ad3ae72f887cf583448986} investment return for fiscal year 2010.

Anyone want to guess, based on sales volume, what company Forbes identifies as the number 1 ranked, US-based, publicly traded company in the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 Index?

Yup.

Walmart Stores

Me thinks the Houston municipal employees (of which the HOPE Local 123 union is included), Jolanda Jones and Mayor Parker need Walmart more than Walmart needs the Houston municipal employees

No wonder Jolanda Jones voted no to Walmart in the Heights. She needs the vote of HOPE union members to get re-elected. Walmart always fights back when unions try to gain a toe-hold in a Walmart store.

No wonder Mayor Parker voted yes to Walmart in the Heights. She too needs the vote of HOPE union members to get re-elected. Walmart stock has helped HMEPS performance.

Walmart. Save money. Live better.
