Public Allegation of For Sale Endorsement by Link Letter

As anyone knows by now, I'm not a fan of the Link Letter and other publications that have a "whiff of pay-to-play" by charging candidates for advertisements after endorsing them. This problem is a pervasive in the Harris County Republican Party, where three of these publications seem to be the dominant factor in deciding the outcome of primary elections. For the first time, I have been able to get someone to go on-record, saying that, in his mind, an offer to sell an endorsement was made by the proprietor of the Link Letter, Terry Lowry.

I've received several reports that on election day, March 2nd, someone was going around and setting up stands labeled "Sample Republican Ballots" that were filled with voter slate cards. Two precincts in Kingwood, #'s 562 and 760 were named specifically. If you saw them, took a sample "ballot", or took a picture, please contact me. Thanks much.

I've had an opportunity to review more of the documentation surrounding one of the participants in the runoff for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5, Place 2, George Huntoon. And while the information will probably not be helpful to Mr. Huntoon, I think that it at least provides some context to the allegations, particularly Mr. Huntoon's assertion that this was a Homeowner's Association dispute that went beyond the norm.

And So the Nastiness Starts

In Harris County Republican Party primary elections, runoffs are characterized not by the relative merits of the candidates or issues, but by the level of personal vitriol and nastiness that can be spewed forth by paid political consultants and those that consider themselves to be guardians of the door through which good Republicans pass. I must admit to having had some measure of false hope that the HCRP chair race would not be run in this fashion. A small measure, but a measure. That measure was quickly tossed overboard yesterday.
