Honestly, I've never thought of myself as a danger to anyone. Well,
except perhaps to my lawn and plants: I admit, I do not have a green
thumb.
But, a danger? As in, a scary person? Nope, never thought that.
Heck, I remember crying when, as a child, I shot a bird with my BB gun!
How could anyone consider me dangerous?
Be that as it may, apparently, I am a danger. At least, that is how
Robert Novak, king of slime, thinks of me. An awful lot of other
otherwise thoughtful people agree with and champion his views that I am
a dangerous person. You see, this is what Mr. Novak said of me and people like me while ranting against Mike Huckabee:
The rise of evangelical Christians as the motive force that blasted the GOP out of minority status during the past generation always contained an inherent danger if these new Republican acolytes supported not merely a conventional conservative but one of their own.
That would be me. I am an "evangelical Christian", at least as far
as I know. Definitions change so fast these days, it's hard to keep up.
But as much as people consider themselves Jewish, Muslim or Buddhist, I
consider myself an evangelical Christian. Want to know why, you'll have
to email me, that is not my purpose for writing this.
I'm not sure what he means by "new Republican acolytes". I've voted
Republican in every election, save Ross Perot, since becoming old
enough to vote. But I'm certain of what he means by evangelical
Christians – a group of people that politicians, particularly
Republicans, like to use for their benefit and then toss to the curb
after elections. After all, if you want to trash someone without
recourse, what better group to pick on?
Politics is a nasty business. And that is unfortunate for those of
us that have stars in our eyes. I'm quite certain that Mr. Huckabee can
handle the nastiness, lies, distortions and smears of his record; he's
been elected many times and must be used to it. That doesn't make it
right; it just makes it what it is.
But I must ask myself why it has to be this way for the ordinary
folk, those people that just want to see someone who shares their
values elected to office? Why must they be labeled "an inherent danger"
at the same time they are being asked for their support for candidates
that share only a portion of their values? Do the political elite of
the Republican Party see us in the same light as the Democrat Party
sees the black vote? An automatic pull of the lever for Republicans?
If so, I think they are making a huge mistake. Whether we turn to
the Democrat nominee (shudder) or go third party (another shudder) or
sit this one out and not vote at all, the establishment Republicans
take us for granted and disparage us at their own peril. Perhaps we are
"dangerous" after all.
