of things going on right now. The repairman had to order parts for the washer and the icemaker, so they are still down. Have to get the Regal ready to take to 2, she's decided to wait on a new car. SU's not feeling so great, must be the same virus I've had. Doesn't really make you sick, just don't feel all that great.

But those are just things. After the repairman left yesterday, I decided to go by the mission I mentioned a couple of weeks ago and take a few pictures. They need a website up and running, so...I volunteered. Heck, there's no such thing as too many, no?

So anyways, I drive up, thinking no one is going to be there and what do I find? One of my class members, DB, pouring a concrete patio for them. The person running the mission had mentioned that they needed one because of the mud when it rains. So, DB just did it. Pretty cool seeing him get involved like that.

Met SU at the remote later. She's being courted by another company and is thinking about that a lot. I've always said that if she hadn't decided to stay home and raise the girls, she'd be CEO of a major corp by now. Smart kid, that SU. And purty too.

Really do need to take the time to outline Sowell's newest book . Heard a guy on Bill Bennett this morning saying that we need to bailout the people who took out ARM's and are now being foreclosed on. Utter nonsense, yet Bill, one of the most intellectual of conservatives, seemed to agree. Disappointing.

Didn't play much last night, just ran through the song a few times on big ugly. Think I'll put new strings on the Epi and try it again. The Taylor 810 has too much harmonic sound to capo it up that high. I could play it open but then I miss the contemporary sound. Too many choices.

Running a server isn't all that much fun. I mean, it's something to do, I suppose but things can spin out of control quickly.

Somehow I managed to screw up the Postfix configuration files. I think. Still not sure but one thing I do know is that all of the mail systems stopped working. Mail transport unavailable was a popular error message. Never could figure out what happened, ended up trashing the whole server and starting anew.

Which meant that I lost all of the email for all of the sites that was being held in the mail queue. Not good but none of them are mission critical sites. And the sites were down from about 5 pm yesterday until 8 am today. Again, nothing mission critical but it does reinforce to me that I made the right career choice by not making a living running servers.

The good news is that I was able to use tar to backup the entire directory structure with bzip compression, compressing 5 gigs into one half gig file. Unpacking it restored everything in one simple step. Way cool. Beats ftp'ing thousands of files which would have taken an awful long time to do.

So that was pretty much my entire day yesterday. I was so frazzled when I got home last night I couldn't see straight. Went upstairs and played big ugly, the Taylor 615 . Awesome guitar. Switched over to the Ibanez AEL50 and it sounded so weak. Then the Epiphone AJ35 , which sounds great normally but not after playing big ugly.

Anyways, I was working on Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone). Great song, hope to sing it soon.

After that, I just went on to bed. Long day.

where nothing goes right? That's what yesterday was.

Started off bad when I woke up and found a note from 2 that the washing machine had leaked. Not a good thing to roll out of the rack to. Couldn't do much at that point about it, so I saved it for when I got home.

Get to the plantation and my inventory is off. Never a good thing but at least it was showing that we had more than we should, which is better than if it had shown a shortage. Still looking into that one.

Get a call from South America, a container is at the dock but customs is holding it up because of a labeling error.

Rain storm rolls in and soaks the place. A trucker can't see in the rain and rolls through one of the landscaped areas, leaving deep ruts and dragging mud all through the place.

Make it home 2 hours later than normal and decide to check out the washing machine. Turn it on, go check email, phone rings, get distracted, hear a noise and think, dang, more rain? Snapped to a couple of minutes later and run to the machine - water everywhere. Sigh.

At that point, SU walks in the door and sees me frazzled. Must be like in the fifties when the husband comes home to find his wife in tears. So she says, let's get out of here and head to the remote, that's what it's there for.

Couple of margaritas later, life was good again.

Class was very good Print E-mail

this morning. Had a lot of guys (and gals) there today, that felt better after last week. The guys weren't in a particularly talkative mood but when they did, you could tell they were engaged with the subject.

We used Genesis 29-31 as the backdrop for a lesson titled God's Faithfulness. As I was preparing for the discussion, I read the story straight through several times. Amazing. It reads as a short story or novella. Every flaw you want to find in man is in that story, as well as redemption and the steady hand of God. Really cool, I don't know that it's ever affected me like that before.

The service was okay, the pastor's sermon sorta kinda fit in with our discussion. He used the capture of Jericho as his background. One of the things that stood out was Joshua's order to the army to be quiet, no talking, as they marched around the city. Stopped the negative talk, eh? Interesting.

Been working on websites this afternoon, finally, FINALLY got the Prayer Center working again. That one took some time. When I migrated servers, somehow, someway an errant apostrophe found it's way into a php file. Dang, that took forever. Good news is that it is now fixed on all the sites!

The pulled pork was wonderful. My concern about too much pecan was ill-founded, no bitter taste and my, my, it was good. Gonna have more later. Probably be having it for lunch all week long.

Been practicing Amazing Grace (My Chains Have Gone) all afternnon. I think I'm going to play in G with it capo'd at 5 using D shapes. Had a nice sound out of the Taylor DN3 , not too mandolinish. Plus, G lets me stretch the vocal chords a bit. Not too high but high. Once again, Graham/Daniel Choo has done some excellent work but this one really wasn't hard to figure out.

I'm thinking about doing a chapter by chapter review of Thomas Sowell's Economic Facts and Fallacies. He writes in such an easy to read fashion that most people should be able to comphrehend conservativism.

Oh well, off to church.

Been a slow, relaxing day Print E-mail

around the trailer. Didn't do a whole heck of a lot, which, of course, is why I characterize it as relaxing.

It was picture day for the church directory. We went up late afternoon and had our picture taken with Pop. Just us and Pop, the girls are free spirits now. 1 mentioned that she really wanted to be included, made me sad that she wasn't. Work, life, you know, it gets in the way, I guess.

Had to get a haircut and beard trim for the picture, was close to the old 'hood, so I stopped in at the local market. They had pork shoulders for $0.78/lb, picked up a couple of 10 pounders. Have 'em on the pit as we speak, been awhile since we had pulled pork.

Watched the stupidest/coolest movie we've seen in a long time last night, Beowulf. Stupid, definitely. I mean, dude strips naked to fight the beast. But cool as heck in the CGI dept. Naked dude is flying around, kicking the beast's butt.

Installed a little flash picture drawing component today. Pretty neat in a time wasting manner. Just click on Draw A Picture! above.

I must admit to having thoroughly enjoyed this years Republican presidential primary. For the first time in a long time, I had a candidate that I could support without reservation and without hesitation. A class act to the end, he never succomed to the type of negative campaign that Mitt Romney ran.

The following is an email that he sent:

Spc. Orlando Perez Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 March 2008

After escorting many fallen soldiers to their final resting place, I’ve learned that nothing is more heart wrenching than the cries of a grieving widow.

As the rifle shots echoed and the bugler played, the cries of April Perez, widow of Spc. Orlando “Tony” Perez could be heard above the sound of flags whipping in the brisk, chilled wind. Dreams of a life with her husband, of future children jumping into their Daddy’s arms, shattered by the cold reality of war.

By all accounts, Tony was a model soldier and citizen. His parents emigrated from El Salvador to the U.S. in search of a better life. Tony took advantage of their dream and avoided the crime ridden gang life that so often befalls young men. He joined the ROTC at Bellaire High School and later attended the University of Houston Downtown. But the call to see the world and participate in a higher calling was too strong and interrupted his education to join the Army.

On Sunday, Feb. 24th, Tony was killed in action in Iraq as he was trying to rid neighborhoods of insurgents, making them safe for everyday life, for people he’d never met but knew, deep down, it was the right thing to do. He was a leader, taking on the challenge of entering rooms first, with unknown danger lying in wait. His platoon members recognized his bravery, earning their respect and friendship.

I asked a young boy of 8 or 9 today if he knew Tony. He replied, my cousin? Sure, he lived with us for three years. He was fun. He was cool.

I suspect that Tony’s family will surround his young widow and let her feel some of the love that she has lost. In time, her hurt will subside and she will recognize that she is not the only person that lost time with Tony. We all did.

You see, it is men like Tony Perez that make this great nation great. Men that seek a higher calling and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for you and me.

Perhaps, as LST member LizBV said about the Patriot Guard Riders, “The families are so grief stricken, these days are a blurr - but the heart “takes pictures.” One day they will hold onto the picture YOU and your brothers have provided.”

Rest in peace, soldier. Godspeed to your family.

has kept right on rolling without you participating. Been a whole week since my last post here, I've been in somewhat of a fog, I suppose. That always happens when I get too involved in the inner working of computers, software and such.

Made a ton of changes to several websites this week, the biggest is the move to the dedicated server. So much faster but now I'm responsible for the upkeep, not only of the various sites but of the server. It's been so long since I've use the command line, everything took twice as long as I relearned vi, grep, chmod, chown, chgrp, reslove.conf files, nameserver configuration, email configs, etc. Almost back in action now.

First off, 2 is okay, the only injury was a sprained ankle and bruising. Which is very good considering that she was T-boned and the car was totaled. Now to negotiate with the ins. co. over the payout and determine what to do for another vehicle. I was glad SU got to go and spend some time helping her.

Yesterday, SU and I rode the bike over to a mission/outreach in Pasadena called The Refuge. We met several of our class members there and discussed how we could help. I think we'll adopt this one for now and see if we can contribute, it'll be good for our members.

Today was awesome. RSa asked me to fill in for him and BT was filling in for GE, so we just rocked the house. Had a blast but was so nervous I got a major headache. Lunch w/Pop after that at the Dinner Bell, then tried to take a nap.

The week is looking busy, so I don't think I'm going to be able to go on the Patriot Guard ride I was thinking about. For all the talk of surges and success, people tend to forget that our guys are still getting killed over there.
